His latest building, the first in Australia, is as radical - so much so that critics have likened it to a crumpled brown paper bag. (DogoNews)

Most stick to old-fashioned tactics like book tours that allow them to connect with their existing readers and attract new ones. However, there are a few that pull some amazing marketing stunts to get their publications noticed. (Dogo News)

In Current Events we read an article entitled The Mystery Surrounding New England Patriots' Deflated Footballs. With less than a week left before Superbowl  XLIX, the argument among sports fans and experts should largely be about which of the two teams - the New England Patriots or the Seattle Seahawks - is going to take home the coveted title. However this year, the light banter has been overshadowed by a more serious discussion - did the Patriots cheat at the January 19th AFC Championship Game against the Indianapolis Colts by using deflated balls? In English, we finished the excerpt of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne. We tackled the challenging questions in class and had a great discussion about the traits of the main characters.
  1. At the story's end, Aronnax writes, "So, to the question which the Book of Ecclesiastes posed 6,000 years ago, 'hast thou walked in the search of the depth?', two men, amongst all men, now have the right to reply. Captain Nemo and I." That is, Aronnax claims to have the same knowledge of the ocean depths as Captain Nemo. Do we believe this claim? Why or why not?
  2. Let's assume that Nemo was terribly wronged—that he was driven from land because of some awful tragedy, and that he and his crew endured the worst possible punishments and humiliations. Would Nemo's actions be justified then?
  3. Is the Nautilus's plunge into the Maelstrom really an accident? Is an experienced captain like Nemo likely to make such a mistake?

WINTER STORM JUNO

No School Tomorrow 1/27/15

Blizzard warnings have been issued for parts of seven states in anticipation of Winter Storm Juno, which will be a major snowstorm for the Northeast Monday through Tuesday night, lingering into Wednesday morning. Parts of the region will see blizzard conditions and more than 2 feet of snow.
The high confidence in forecast wind and snowfall has led the National Weather Service to issue blizzard warnings well in advance of the storm. Those warnings stretch from parts of New Jersey all the way to Downeast Maine, including the cities of Boston, Providence, Hartford and Portland. The warnings go into effect as early as 1 p.m. Monday in the New York City area; the warnings for Downeast Maine begin in the wee hours of Tuesday morning. Most of the warnings are valid through late Tuesday night.

In English class, we continued our excerpts unit by reading the first 3 chapters of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea by Jules Verne. In the year 1866, ships of several nations spot a mysterious sea monster, which some suggest to be a giant narwhal. The United States government assembles an expedition inNew York City to find and destroy the monster. Professor Pierre Aronnax, a French marine biologist and narrator of the story, who happens to be in New York at the time, receives a last-minute invitation to join the expedition which he accepts. Canadian whaler and master harpoonist Ned Land and Aronnax's faithful servant Conseil are also brought aboard. In Current Events we read an article entitled Look, No Hands! Futuristic Driverless Cars Are All The Rage.In early January, Mercedes-Benz captured the world’s imagination by unveiling a futuristic self-driving car prototype at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. In addition to being autonomous, the F015 Luxury in Motion, also promises to be fuel efficient and as its name indicates, the epitome of luxury. While this is in complete contrast to Google's compact, koala-like autonomous vehicle, one thing is apparent - if manufacturers have their way, driverless cars will be sharing the highways with human-driven vehicles, within the next decade.

The trip, the first of many that will be undertaken before a manned mission to Mars, is a test to gather information about the physiological and physical effects of extended space travel on the human body.
Kelly will serve as the station's commander for the last six months, while Kornienko will be its engineer throughout the extended stay. They will also participate in a variety of experiments to shed light on how human eyes, bones, and other organs react to extended space visits, which have so far have been limited to a maximum of six months.Simultaneously, Scott's identical twin brother, Mark Kelly, who also happens to be a NASA astronaut, will be participating in similar experiments back on earth so that scientists can compare physical changes between the two, who share the same DNA. In English, we continued to read excerpts from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn Mark Twain.  The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is often considered Twain's greatest masterpiece. Combining his raw humor and startlingly mature material, Twain developed a novel that directly attacked many of the traditions the South held dear at the time of its publication. Huckleberry Finn is the main character, and through his eyes, the reader sees and judges the South, its faults, and its redeeming qualities. Huck's companion Jim, a runaway slave, provides friendship and protection while the two journey along the Mississippi on their raft.

Hazardous Factory Work During the Industrial Revolution
Writing prompt (type or write it right on the worksheet)
Why do you think children were allowed to work in factories during the time of the Industrial Revolution?

Notes:

Today our class had a field trip to the Microsoft Store in Roosevelt Field Mall. The class got to learn about how the store works and about some of the new products they have to sell. The class had a great time.

In Social Studies, we read about Hazardous Factory Work during the Industrial Revolution. Working in the factories of the Industrial Revolution was hazardous. The factory workers faced safety hazards, health hazards, and cruel treatment. Factory machines were the latest technology, and factory owners were anxious to get their machines up and running. Safety was not a major concern. Dangerous parts of machines were not screened off. Machines were not equipped with features to make them shut off in case of an accident. (EdHelper)

In Current Events we read an article from DogoNews entitled Having a Snow Day? Enjoy It While It Lasts. Every year around this time, schools districts in the Eastern and Midwestern regions of the United States brace themselves for the inevitable "snow days" - school closures forced by the freezing Arctic blasts that dip temperatures to as low as 40 below in states like Iowa. While a great favorite amongst students, the unscheduled holidays are a big nuisance for educators. That's because in order to complete the State mandated 180 days of student instruction, they have to compensate for the unscheduled holidays by cancelling teacher enrichment days, long weekends and in extreme cases, even cutting short spring and summer vacations. However, with advances in technology those worries may soon be a thing of the past. That's because many schools are in the process or have already converted "snow days" into "e-learning days." That means that instead of frolicking in the white stuff, students are expected to attend school virtually, using their laptops or tablets. (DogoNews)
