In class today, we read a non fiction text about the famous astronomer Copernicus. We continued discussing non fiction text and the author's purpose. Our author, Mary Lynn Bushong, was writing to inform! In the early 1500s, when virtually everyone believed Earth was the center of the universe, Polish scientist Nicolaus Copernicus proposed that the planets instead revolved around the sun. Although his model wasn't completely correct, it formed a strong foundation for future scientists to build on and improve mankind's understanding of the motion of heavenly bodies. Check out our new literature board in our classroom. Our class is consistently analyzing short stories, excerpts
from various novels and poems in different genres. We are talking about author’s
purpose and how perspective affects an authors’ writing style even in fictional
texts. We are looking at the lives of famous authors like Lois Lowry, Louis
Sachar, Carl Hiassen, JK Rowling, J.R.R
Tolkien, Jerry Spinelli, Shel Silverstein and Jeff Kinney. By studying
their lives, we can better understand what influenced them throughout the
writing process.
We are asking the critical questions:
How do our lives affect the way we write?
How can we use our own personal experiences to add to our writing pieces?

#WeekinReview: 10th Edition
Hello all! We are back with our 10th edition of #WeekinReview. Believe it or not, this is the last edition of April! Next time we come to you will be in May. Wow!
We all enjoyed our Spring Break and we hope you did as well! Our newest edition is packed with hard hitting news. We are missing some of our weekly contributors such as Noah's Knick Knacks because of the shortened week. No worries, for they will be back next week!
We work on the paper twice a week and since we came back on Wednesday, this week was only one work day! We are still so impressed with what our classes were able to churn out on short notice! But a deadline is a deadline! Everyone needs their news and we know that!
Thanks for reading! Hope everyone enjoys the Gersh Academy Walk-A-Thon. Look for pictures in next week's edition. Have a great weekend.
Make sure to check out our digital edition

WALK-A-THON TOMORROW!
Tomorrow April 25th, is our Walk-A-Thon for Autism Awareness! We will be walking from 11:00 11:45.
In English, we read a story entitled The Man Who Named America It is about Martin Waldseemüller who was a cartographer that named America after he made the map. We talked about the author's purpose which was to inform! He definitely did a great job of that. The map has been referred to in various circles as America's birth certificate and for good reason; it is the first document on which the name "America" appears. It is also the first map to depict a separate and full Western Hemisphere and the first map to represent the Pacific Ocean as a separate body of water. The purchase of the map concluded a nearly century-long effort to secure for the Library of Congress that very special cartographic document which revealed new European thinking about the world nearly 500 years ago.
