Homework:
Study for Spelling Unit 6 on Monday
Enjoy your weekend :)
See you Monday
Notes:
Remember, the Science Fair is on November 7th from 6-9. We will be scheduling parent teacher conferences for that night as well!
We are going Pumpkin Picking at Schmitt's Farm located in Melville NY on October 30, 2013. Make sure you return the permission slip if you haven't done so yet.

In Current Events, we enjoyed our weekly Flocabulary fix. Check out the lyrics
Another week finally comes to a close,
The news brought the headlines, we bring the flows.
With the Treasury on the verge of a meltdown,
Wednesday, Congress voted on the shutdown.
Yes they did, and the whole world was watching,
To see if the economic picture would darken.
Well, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded,
It went to the organization that thwarted
The further use of chemical weapons in Syria,
So hey OPCW, cheers to ya! Heard about Malala? The courageous girl?
Who survived being shot and inspired the world?
Well, back home it ain’t all good, if you will,
Some Pakistani citizens are being very critical.
Guess haters gone hate—Oh—I should mention,
In ‘99 a cyclone did India in.
This time around, the government was on point, And evacuated thousands, saved them from Phailin.
Which is the name of the cyclone that struck,
And hit the coast harder than a Mack truck.
Man, I bet it was loud, I wonder was it louder than
A stadium full of Kansas City Chiefs fans? They broke the Guinness Record for loudest crowd,
137.5 decibels—WOW! In South Dakota blizzards killed 80 thousand cattle,
Which means live stock prices shooting up and that’ll
Mean the cost of beef might be on the rise too,
All because a freak snowstorm came too soon. In Brazil, protests are getting out of hand,
People marching in two cities, it’s getting crazy, fam.
All because teachers there are on a strike,
But yours aren't so you better treat them right!

Notes:
In Current Events we read an article Rare 400 Cent American Coin Sells for 2.5 Million USD. When the Los Angeles branch of Bonhams Auctioneers placed a rare $4USD gold coin up for bidding they knew they had something special. However even the experts were stunned when on September 23rd, 2013, instead of the expected $1.5 million USD, the coin fetched $2.75 million USD, placing it amongst the 10 most valuable US coins sold at an auction. It was of course no ordinary gold coin but one that collectors call a 'white whale' - Coins so rare that they come on the market maybe once or twice every decade. This particular one, part of a 27 precious coin collection known as "Tacasyl Collection of Magnificent United States Proof Gold Coins", was an 1880 Coiled Hair Stella, only 10-15 of which are known to exist. Given that most are already in private collections or public institutions, the chances of one coming to market are extremely slim.
In Career Development we talked about the skills and qualities of a Camera Man. We learned their average salary is $40,390 dollars. They risk their lives to bring news stories to forefront. A cameraman operates a variety of cameras to record video film for motion pictures, television shows and commercials. He may also shoot film for sportscasts, ceremonial events or concerts. As part of camera crew, he typically works with a team of directors, technicians, and performers to consult on the technical and creative aspects of the production

In Career Development, we talked about the career Locomotive Engineer! Did you ever have a model train? When you set it up, did you dream about driving the train? Locomotive engineers are very skilled. They have years of experience. They operate large trains that carry cargo and passengers.
Science Fair is on November 7th! Start thinking of ideas for a class experiment!
In Current Events we read an article entitled The $100 USD Bill Gets A Much Needed Makeover. It has taken over a decade and faced numerous design hurdles, but the new $100 USD bill that Americans fondly call 'Benjamin' finally made its debut on October 8th, 2013. The largest U.S. denomination in circulation, it is not surprisingly, the most recognized form of U.S. Currency, worldwide.
